About Vaccine R&D
As vaccine development has advanced, new types of vaccines have arisen, presenting challenges in characterization and further linking characteristics to function. However, recent development of vaccines against current pandemics or more complex diseases such as has met difficulties. In addition, the gaps in our knowledge on protective responses against pathogens are a significant barrier to ideal vaccine design and are often associated with increased risk of clinical failure.

What is the Vaccines Scientific Leaders Programme?
The Scientific Leaders Programme (SLP) is a 2-year global programme that aims to build a pipeline of leading scientists with the right expertise and technical capabilities to drive the future of Vaccines Research and Development at GSK. The SLP runs across three locations; Italy, Belgium or United States which align to our key Vaccine R&D hubs.
How does the Vaccines Scientific Leaders Programme work?
You will spend 2 years working on a key development project, as a core contributor within one of the strategic areas of our Vaccines R&D business. Working on challenging projects will provide you with in-depth knowledge of the ways in which Science and Technology is being applied across R&D at GSK. You will be contributing to our mission to improve the quality of human life, building on GSKs history of developing and applying advanced technologies to create novel vaccines, whilst fostering your own strong foundations for a future career in cutting edge science.
Is the Vaccines Scientific leaders Programme for you?
This is a scientific/technical leadership position where you will be empowered to be innovative, collaborative, decisive and bold to solve novel R&D problems. On completion of the 2-year programme we aim to bring you on-board into available technical leadership roles that best suits business’ needs and your abilities.
We’re looking for future scientific leaders to help embed modern Scientific principles and ways of working within the vaccines R&D organization. You will do this through the following project:
Project Title: Innovative read-out strategy to support mRNA Projects
Project proposal:
COVID19 era has demonstrated that mRNA technology is a game changer in the development of Vaccines with faster timelines to run clinical trials and more agility to identify new targets for new vaccines. The clinical read-out strategy that supports vaccine clinical development includes the use of immunological and microbiological assays that are classically performed at laboratory level. The need to accelerate the delivery of laboratory results will trigger new approaches, including innovative assays to measure vaccine effect at point of care or at patient’ home. These new approaches in clinical testing may not only serve the mRNA vaccines but also other types of new vaccines in development.
Responsibilities:
As SLP Associate you will act as associate Clinical Readouts Team Leader on at least one mRNA vaccine Project, leading a clinical read-out team made of clinical laboratory scientists and clinical/preclinical/regulatory team members of the Project. You will liaise with other innovative GSK projects as well as assays senior scientists to cross-fertilize on the use of innovative technologies in clinical trials. You will contribute to define new readout strategy and associated sample and testing logistic study design when using clinical assays suitable for home testing. You will ensure study set up and plans are adapted to support point-of care and home testing while securing quality data delivery. You will also ensure submission of appropriate study/assay documentation to regulators and ethical committees.
We think this is a fantastic opportunity for you to work in a large international R&D organization with a rich portfolio of several new vaccines and medicines in development. You will be part of a human-size team of cross-functional experts (clinicians, assay scientists, regulatory experts etc) that will engage and focus to ensure progression of a new vaccine while considering the needs of the study participants in clinical trials. You will be closely working (matrix) with the Scientific Innovation Leader in our Clinical Laboratory Science group. You’ll be directly contributing to the development and integration in clinical trials of an innovative assay to monitor the impact of vaccination on the study participants. While the position is based in Belgium, you will be working in a multicultural environment with Research Centres based in Belgium but also Italy (Sienna) and the US (Rockville).
To be successful in this role you should have:
PhD in microbiology or immunology
Excellent communication and leadership skills including decision making, team building and problem solving
Flexible thinking and creativity
The ability to deal with complexity. Have strong problem-solving and self-directional abilities
Excellent interpersonal skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to convey scientific messages across multidisciplinary functions
Good planning, prioritization and organizational skills
Ability to communicate orally and in written to multiple stakeholders, both internally and externally

If you have a prior experience in working in a GCLP laboratory, for instance on PCR or immunochemistry or viral neutralization assay or cell-based assays, this is a plus, but not an absolute requirement.
Having prior exposure to regulatory environment or having worked in collaboration with a biotech company is certainly a plus.
Available Location: Belgium – Rixensart
We recommend you apply as soon as possible, because we accept ongoing applications and will close this vacancy once we have enough applications.
