This is an exciting opportunity for a brilliant PhD level scientist to join a world leading Vaccines Research & Development environment. You’ll be channeling your passion for science and helping to revolutionize the future of Vaccines R&D at GSK whilst fostering strong foundations for a career in cutting edge science.
Do you want to be part of a company investing in scientific and technical excellence to develop a pipeline of new products to meet the needs of patients across world? Please read on for more details on this unique opportunity and details on how to apply.
About Vaccine R&D
As vaccine development has advanced, new types of vaccines have arisen, presenting challenges in characterization and further linking characteristics to function. However, recent development of vaccines against current pandemics or more complex diseases such as has met difficulties. In addition, the gaps in our knowledge on protective responses against pathogens are a significant barrier to ideal vaccine design and are often associated with increased risk of clinical failure.
What is Vaccines Scientific Leaders Programme?
The Scientific Leaders Programme in Vaccines is a 2-year global programme which builds a pipeline of scientists with the right expertise, technical capabilities and behaviours to drive the future in Vaccines Research and Development.
How does the Vaccines Scientific leaders Programme work?
You will spend two years working on a key development project, contributing to key strategic areas of our Vaccines R&D business. We have three location options; Italy, Belgium or US which aligns to our Vaccine R&D hubs. Working on challenging projects will provide you with in-depth knowledge of the ways in which Science and Technology is being applied across R&D in GSK. All associates will be contributing to our mission to improve the quality of human life, by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer – all while fostering strong foundations for a future career in science.
Is the Vaccines Scientific leaders Programme for you?
This is a scientific/technical leadership position where you will be empowered to be innovative, collaborative, decisive and bold to solve novel R&D problems. On completion of the 2-year programme we aim to bring you on-board into available technical leadership roles that best suits business’ needs and your abilities.
We need Scientific leaders to help embed modern Scientific principles and ways of working within the vaccines R&D organisation. You will do this through:
Project Title: Development of innovative in vitro lymphoid systems to characterize immune responses induced by vaccine technological platforms
Project proposal:
GSK Research & Development is a pioneer in the field of developing innovative vaccines, based on existing or emerging technologies such as adjuvants or RNA vectors. Advanced in vitro models are the cornerstone for translating basic research into clinical success, aligned with our ethical commitment to limit and eventually replace animal use. GSK R&D is largely investing in developing and implementing micro-physiological 3D in vitro models for screening, characterizing and comparing vaccine candidates for better predicting their real-life efficacy.]
Responsibilities:
Within the Adjuvant Research & Systems Vaccinology preclinical group and in partnership with matrix teams that drive our adjuvant and clinical translation vaccine strategies, you will in house design, implement and master advanced in vitro immune models, i.e. equivalent 3D human lymphoid compartment composed of key innate and adaptive cells, that will enable:
screening of innovative adjuvant formulations or alternatives to existing immunoenhancers
characterizing RNA vaccines and associated formulations including analysis of innate responses, reactogenicity-related biomarkers, and quality of adaptive immunity.
deciphering and comparing mechanisms of action of vaccine technologies (e.g. adjuvant, RNA vectors, others) for better informing prophylactic or therapeutic medicine development.
This is a groundbreaking position in the GSK Vx organization by specifically driving our internal program with the ambition of stirring away from animal models with limited predictivity towards in vitro lymphoid systems for bringing more and better vaccine candidates to clinical success. In this position, you will also network with internal and external key opinion leaders for scouting and assessing advanced in vitro 3D models.
The every day job will consist in being exposed to strategic discussions, turn project needs into actual solutions, perform wet-lab activities, analyze data, run the biological interpretation, and communicate it to scientific leaders.
You will also be responsible for scientifically contributing to ongoing collaboration(s) in this field of expertise within GSK or with 3rd parties, and initiate novel partnerships if necessary.
To be successful in this role you should have:
PhD in immunology or equivalent with proven experience in organoid biology (MUST)/immunology (Preferred)
Hands on experience in the development and implementation of validated or exploratory advanced in vitro co-culture systems (MUST)
Experience in microscale immunological and biological read-outs tailored to micro-physiological in vitro models (Preferred)
Strong expertise in data analysis and interpretation (MUST)
The ability to deal with complexity. Have strong problem-solving and self-directional abilities.
Excellent interpersonal skills (MUST)
Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to convey scientific messages across multidisciplinary functions.
Good planning, prioritization and organisational skills
English is mandatory. Knowledge of French is a plus.
Available Location: Belgium – Rixensart
We recommend you apply as soon as possible, because we accept ongoing applications and will close this vacancy once we have enough applications.
